Augustana College

Overview

Augustana is a national liberal arts college. Our home is a wooded, 115-acre campus adjacent to the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Illinois. We enroll about 2500 undergraduates and we’re considered a very strong institution: we’re a Phi Beta Kappa school, admissions here is generally rated as "more selective" and our students’ median ACT is about 26 (the converted SAT would be about 1200). While the academic program is uniformly strong, we have reason to be especially proud of our programs in the natural sciences, music and international study.

Augustana is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This affiliation is a matter of tradition and philosophy rather than daily operation; that is, our affiliation helps shape the College's perspective but does not imply that we are a church school in the sense of having a strong religious orthodoxy.

In this section, we address five topics:
  1. Augustana's history – a brief review of the events that have helped shape our cultural identity and our mission statement.
  2. Augustana's strategic vision – highlights from Authentically Augustana, our first formally-adopted strategic plan.
  3. Faculty profile – an introduction to your potential colleagues and also to the responsibilities that the faculty holds.
  4. Student profile – a snapshot of student demographics, accomplishments and aspirations.
  5. Augustana's academic program – an overview of majors, programs and academic distinctions.
Rock Island is one of the Quad Cities. From here, it's about an hour to Iowa City - home of the University of Iowa - and less than three hours to downtown Chicago. We provide more information on life in the Quad Cities in the community section of this site.
